Who are my target students this tuition?

1)Students who have failed their Chinese.

2)Students who passed the Chinese exam but do not have confidence to breakthrough from a borderline pass.

RGS Yi Chen came to my tuition when she was still P5 and has improve greatly over the few months with me. Is PSLE Chinese difficult?

The Primary School Leaving Examination is one that every student must take to move on to Secondary school. How well one does in this examination will determine which school he/she will enter. Is PSLE Chinese difficult? It depends on your child's foundation, and his/her exposure to the language. They will be tested on areas like writing, listening, and comprehending. Steps have been taken by MOE to adjust the marks allocated for each segment to decrease difficulty and increase relevance.
Some would question the importance of the subject in the overall aggregate score. A question frequently heard from parents is,"Why don't I allow my child to concentrate on English, Mathematics and Science first rather than Chinese?" The answer is the weightage of all the subjects are equal, and therefore a drop in Chinese will bring down the total aggregate score. I have students who missed out by one or two points to enter their desired schools of choice like ACS, Victoria they end up regretting not putting enough effort into Chinese.
Getting a huge improvement in grades is something that cannot be done overnight. To achieve the desired result, one must prepare for at least a year. Students should have a sturdy foundation and familiarise themselves with most of the common words by Primary Five. This is because during Primary Six the teachers will be too busy doing intense revision of the past two years to go through the basics. A deadly and unfortunately common mistake are students who prepare for the Chinese Examination at the very last minute. Students will not be able to study properly under the pressure and will likely panic on the day of the examination, which is not recommended. I strongly urge parents who have Primary Five children to send them for tuition classes during the upcoming November to December holidays if they are weak in the subject. Prepare early and you will have no regrets.

He is actually a typical student who has not much interest towards the language. With a relatively weak foundation,I still recall his struggle in completing "Journey to the West" novel review. I started teaching him from January this year.During the SA1, he scored 47% overall for Chinese. Although disappointed, Samuel's parents did not quit the tuition halfway. They continued to have faith in me. Samuel's poor performance could be due to the limited number of lessons which 1 per week. However he is one who is "academically-conscious". Nearing the exams, I increased the number of lessons so as to prepare him.(Started work 6 weeks prior to exams). This led to his remarkable improvement from 47 to 67. This shows that sometimes the result do not come as fast which may instead take 6 months to one year to surface. If their parents had stopped the lessons 6 months ago, they may not be able to see Samuel progress. Normally he is not fluent in speaking Chinese, speaking in bits and pieces and afraid of making wrong tonation of pinyin. Surprisingly, he did exceedingly well for the Oral component this year even standing out as second best in class. From this year onwards, the syllabus for Chinese Oral took a turn to picture discussion rather than the usual topic discussion. Due to intense practice with me, he probably sat for the exam with new found confidence, with knowledge of what to expect. Thus, this gave him favour with the examiner amongst his peers who could be uunfamiliar with the new syllabus.

Usually a jump of 4 grades need a time of two years. However Samuel has surpass normal expectations and make vast improvement within half the time. Hence, students with weak foundations need at least two lessons per week to be able to improve. Another alternative will be to go for intensive lessons during the holidays.

Fairfield Methodist Sec: outstanding result of 82percent/ diligient,improving student

Jun De from Fairfield Methodist Sec Sch has outdone himself and achieved outstanding result. He scored 82 percent overall for his Chinese making him the best and most improved student i have among the rest. Even Jun De was apalled by his results this time round as it was his first time getting so high during his years of schooling. His paper 1 component was his forte this time round with 17/20 for situational(公函）and 32/40 for composition. I feel that the main factor for his success is due to of his diligience. During the holidays, he did alot of Chinese related assignments which consist of books"非常阅读" that the teachers personally written for the syllabus. Every page consists of interesting passages and innovative questions specially catered for their age to catch their interest and attention. These painstakingly written worksheets are aimed to polish their comprehension skills. Those who may want to purchase the book for your children, it is not for sale anywhere at all unfortunately. The school is very strict about their publications. I would like to applaud Fairfield Methodist dedicated team of teachers for this first-of-its-kind education material which no other school elsewhere has done it.

On the other hand, i got another student, Zhen Wei who has not reached Jun De's pinnacle in Chinese. He does not have interest towards Chinese. Due to little exposure to the language, he has tremendous difficulty in writing especially. But much to my delight he made improvement and for the first time passed his paper 1. Although with the increased demand put upon by the school to restrict the situational writing to formal"gong han" but he still managed to pull it off with the news article review as his preferred composition question. It is heartening that he put what i thought him about the organisation techniques of writing article review into the exam. I hope that this little result will serve as a stepping stone for him to do better.

From my past years of teaching Sec 2 to 3 students from various traditional-English schools i.e. 5 from ACS(I/Barker Rd),few from MGS,SJI or Fairfield methodist,they have something unfortunate in common.That is most of them do not have an interest in Chinese.(no offence given) The extremely weak ones desire to pass.The relatively strong ones from top classes would yearn for an A1 to create the perfect report card. Those are the two categories of students.

More often than not,they will give up halfway when they do not see their fruits of labour. They confidence towards Chinese will sink to an all time low especially at Sec 3 when they are at the brink of O levels either next yr or at the end of the year. Why did they,despite all their hard work, failed to reach their desired grade?Below are some of the possible reasons:

1.They may have "made a dash" too late
Some students only start to put in effort in the language upon reaching a crucial time such as in sec 3.Language often is unlike a Humanities or Mathematics subject where if you memorised or practiced hard enough,you can improve by heaps and bounds. Unknown to many,from my past experience,the average time needed for somebody of a B4-C5 standard to reach an A1 is 1 and a half years.Yes!it's that long.

2.Their foundation is weak and language exposure is limited
Many of the students I have mentioned earlier come from english-speaking homes and schools,where Chinese is only applied at work. Without a firm grasp on basic linguistic techniques, they may find that Chinese just gets harder and harder everytime they study. There comes a point that he finds that no mater how hard he or she try,they're not going to make it...might as well Give UP!

Firstly, when teaching them, i will overcome their disinterest towards Chinese. With methods like surfing the net to search for essay ideas, watching videos and using webcam, Chinese becomes a more "lively" subject that are not just constrained towards doing 课本and 作业. Only after changing their attitude towards Chinese,will they have the interest and morale to continue to srive for their targetted grades in Chinese.

Is Sec 2 Chinese Difficult?

If you are in Sec 2, you still have another 2 yrs before you complete your O levels.But what you are doing during that will have a great effect on your following years.It is a time where you need to:

1. know Interest (to choose your subjects you wanna take)
2. Consider transferring school (IP program)
3. Reconsider taking Higher Chinese or Chinese

So I could say Sec 2 is a important year indeed. Academic results play an important part in those above mentioned 3 actions. When you are asked to choose your subject combination, the first thing they will look out for is your results. Fair enough, the school might even opt you for 7 subj. combination, if they think you have difficulty managing 8.So to stand a chance for a position in your prefered stream,be it art or science,work hard in your studies.

Towards the end of the year it is a window of transition.If your child's results are exceptionally well and think that he or she will thrive better in another school, you could consider putting he or she in the IP program.This gives the child the option to bypass O levels and enter the A level Curriculum.My students like Jilian and Shu En have Chinese to owe to,helping them to get an transfer to their desired school.Jilian transferred to ACS international and Shu En transferred from MGS to SOTA. The language pulled their overall grades up hence increasing the chance of being admitted by the IP schools.Hence you can see,Chinese like other subjects deserve attention and bring you to competetive position whether for subject combi. or a place in a school.
Next most schools will set the exam papers for Sec 2 exceptionally difficult, with the aim of separating those who could not cope with the demands of higher chinese and those who can. Hence usually during Sec 2,students who perform poorly will drop out to Express Chinese and those who did well in Express could move up to Higher chinese.At the of the Sec 4,2 bonus points off L1R5 will be given.

Furthermore,it is advisable to build a strong language foundation in the lower secondary years. Your upper Sec years will have you trying to adapt to the heavy duty subjects like the Pure Sciences,a maths,POA,Pure Humanities etc.You would need to spend time studying the content,having a tendency to neglect the languages.So prepare early folks!

Then,is Sec 1 Chinese difficult?

Upon reaching secondary school, everything takes a turn and academics increase in difficulty.Chinese language is no exception.

Especially when your child is entering one of the "top academic schools" like RI and SAP schools with a strong emphasis on Chinese,he or she needs to be mentally prepared for a more intensive drilling. For example, in the latter schools i mentioned,especially for Higher Chinese, a typical topical test of Chinese may consists of like 20 to 30 challenging proverbs or idioms together with characters they have picked up from the textbook. For exams, schools combine the 100 proverbs they learnt into their exam scope.Imagine a hundred of mind-staggering proverbs(成语) all tested during exam,how stress can one be if he or she has a weak foundation or no interest in Chinese?

Ryan is a very tenacious boy who has good work attitude. During lessons, he will not detest doing compos. Just like a normal student,he dislike the laboriousness and banalness of writing. He resort to typing instead which isn't any compromise since compo allow use of e-dicitonaries and pinyin. Ryan takes every practice seriously and sees it as an opportunity to improve on his work. With accurate techniques taught,he is able to reap his fruits of labour in the recent year-end paper 1 exam. This is the type of end-product i hope to produce when u send your child to my tuition.

Who are the target students?

Students who are studying in schools around the Marine Parade Vacinity like Victoria,CHIJ(Katong),St. Patrick(Sec) and Tao Nan, Kong Hwa, CHIJ Katong(Pri), Ngee Ann Pri will have the convenience to my house if they are attending my lessons. They could come for lessons right after school depending on their dismissal times. On a particular day of the week,some schools do have earlier dismissal time than usual.Hence students could attend lessons on that day.It would be even better if i have students studying in the same school,they could come together then forming a goup no more than 3.I have mentioned before and i wish to highlight it again that I strongly believe in the importance and effectiveness of small group and individual tuition and will not neglect that whenever I am admitting students.

How about students who are not from the above mentioned schools?

Students who are not from the schools nearby my place do not fret!You are still most welcomed to join my tuition.But students who are living in the west and areas that are quite far away would have inconvenience travelling to my place for group tuition. They might want to consider signing up for home tuition that is I will come to their house to teach. If not, another flexible and bold alternative would be during the holidays, your child could attend the intensive lessons at my house during the holidays and when school reopens,if your child is really busy we could continue with once a week and your child could communicate his/her doubts through skype.(refer:to RGS Yi Chen's testimonial)

What do you normally teach?

I teach textbook content,through multimedia like iflash,audio CDs and through educational games from websites like asknlearn.com or lead.com and my CDs. Nearing the exam, I would impart exam techniques through analysing of past year Top Sch papers and notes.I would also spot the hot topics or questions that will likely come out in your child's exam. I would also go through with your child the PSLE past year papers or ten-yrs series if he/she is taking the major exams next year.I balance my teaching with fun and seriousness. Firstly, your child's interest towards Chinese is my utmost concern. Maybe the results would be you parents, your utmost concern but again i emphasise again that doing well in a language needs interest and initiative from your child.That is why your child would usually do better in Mathematics and Sciences as they have the interest and inquisitiveness towards those subjects.But i would not neglect the importance of exams and teach those heavy-duty or "laborious" your child would describe in effective yet efficient way.

What is the difference between Group and Home tuition?

Group tuition is what I would describe literally as a small group of students sitting around the table during my lessons with everyone's attention on me as I teach or on the work given. But i would describe group tuition outside like those premier tuition centres as a group of at least 10 people sitted in a classroom style manner.Some students would sit with their friends and began to chat about K-pop and DOTA(teen stuff) things not related to Chinese at all. Not to mentioned some will sms,or even play game consoles during lessons unnoticed by the teacher. Once some hyperactive or attention-seeking student do some "stunt", the whole class starts laughing and the teacher outnumbered by 1 to 10 is unable control the class.The whole class loses concentration and even those diligient and disciplined students would get affected.
Although the above may be exaggerated but it is really true for many tuition centres. Therefore parents would have to ask themselves this question: Why am I sending my child for tuition? Most answers would be " I would want my child to get additional help to do well in Chinese." I would have to ask you why send your child to another "school classroom" environment if your child needs additional help in the subject.

Another problem with "big class" tuition is the lack of interaction between students and teachers.Thus it is no surprise your child could feel so stranger towards the teacher despite many years of enroling in her classes. This would be disastrous as all the money spent was not put to good use!I believed tuition is built on communication and relationship where the students are bold enough lift some doubts so that the teacher could clear them once and for all. Yes i am talking about interaction. In my small group tuition the speed of learning would be quickened with interaction and discussion,be it between students and students or teacher and students.

Results of "O" level Express Chinese 2010

After months of hard work, my current Sec4 Higher Chinese students(last year Sec 3) have reaped what they sowed. They took the Express Chinese exam last year and prior to that I have given them extra lessons to fully prepare them for this exam.These are their results:

-Jing Quan from Cresent Girls scored an A1 and distinction for Oral

-Andrew Kok from Anglican High scored an A1 and distinction for Oral(R)

-Wee Liang also from Anglican High scored an A2 and distinction for Oral(L)

She's a diligient and disciplined student.Due to the fact that she doesn't come from a chinese speaking background, she might be weak in that language. But she never fail to show her seriousness in learning by asking questions and paying attention to my lessons though they might sometimes be 3-hour long . I enjoy teaching her too, giving her 1-to1 individual lessons despite the fact that our timings always clashes with each other. She scored C5 in her normal school exam,her B3 grade for "O" level is definitely a breakthrough for herself,surpassing her normal performance. During the six months with her, I feel heartened that her Chinese Language standard has improved by heaps and bounds with credit given to her diligience.

She is also another hardworking and promising student with high potential. The advantage is that she comes from a Chinese-speaking background so she has the language foundation there. She comes to my house for lessons once a week as she is always busy with CCA(badminton) committments and other subject tuition. Though she does not really drill and practice the comprehension or compositions segments, she would treasure her lesson time asking me questions to clear her doubts and she does read up alot, gaining exposure. Her main help I guess would be the sessions I asked her to practice Oral conversations on Webcam. This greatly reduce her tendency to get tongue-tied whenever she feels nervous facing the oral examiners. It increases her confidence as she reviews her webcam videos every now and then to spot for errors in her expressions,gesture and speech. The mistakes discussed will then be avoided the next time round we do a "filming". This goes on and on till she could reach near perfection in speaking.Impressing her examiners with her flawless speech and eloquence on the actual day of exam then come naturally for her,giving her the "distinction" on her "o" level cert.

Shi En who is a student at MGS and Jeannes who comes from Orchid Park Secondary came to enrol in my lessons during the june holidays.They were getting mediocre marks for Chinese ranging from C5-C6.They decided that they needed help in order to get at least a merit which is B for the O levels.Although they have already sat for the written papers, which form bulk of the marks, they feel they are not prepared for the last component which is the Oral examination.
They came forward separately,and enrol in the small group tuition with emphasis put on Oral definitely.They were taught the techniques to score well and overcome anxiety on the actual day,at the same time with the help of multimedia,(videos,webcam,skype) overcome the fear of speaking out,even if you feel incompetent in your Chinese.These proves reliable as these students who are "putting their last gamble" in the oral component, will of course feel nervous prior to the exam. I did manage to spot questions relating to the hottest news reports during that period.For example, i did discuss the problem of eating and drinking in MRT carriages during one of the lessons and very fortunate for Jeannes the day she was assign to take, the exact question came out.Though Shi En got a different question, she also did well enough to pull her overall marks to a B3. She was worried that she had problems just to pass the Language. But nevertheless both of them "pulled through" and got a B4.Quite a remarkable performance, within such a short time span. If they had come to me earlier, they got a high possibility of attaining a higher grade,perhaps, an A2 or B3.So parents prepare your child early for the O levels,best is a year before the major examination.Sec 3 is the cut-off time you can not afford to prepare after. Every student would be encouraged to bring their laptops to lessons for innovative learning during group tuition.For home tuition, a home desktop is needed. With the liveliness and animation PC can bring, students can concentrate better especially those with a weak concentration span.

Who needs it?

There are 4 types of students.

a). There are students who do not have confidence,resulting in stutters ,nodding and shaking of heads or yes and no answers.They also do not elaborate,tend to give one-sentence answer that is being asked only.If the students are going to take their PSLE and O level,how are they going to do well?

I specialise in these type of problems.Firstly, i seek to raise their confidence by opening their hearts so that they could express their feelings.After that,find their strengths and talents to build their self-esteem.

With my 30 yrs experience of teaching,i can correct the students' mistakes using webcam,video and voice recording. During their self-study, they could even adjust their mistakes by themselves. If they are able to overcome the fear of facing the camera,their confidence are better than most people their age.

But all these can only be done by having 10-20 intensive lessons. After the holidays,who knows your child will change to become a totally new person with high self-esteem.

b). For students who are hyperactive with a short concentration span and hate Chinese, they might have attended numerous tuition centres and classes in the past, but they are still not showing any improvement.Recommended:(8 lessons)

c). Gifted students and fast-learners who ace in other subjects except Chinese.They are not able to breakthrough their average results .Their standard could not reach the school demands.This can be seen from students who have difficulty comprehending higher order comprehension passages.

This goes the same with Chinese articles 《少年文摘》or 《读者》.Hwa chong Sec 1 students and students from other SAP schools have do a project based on those articles which will be counted in the CA.

Another example would be gifted students from schools like RGS might not have the depth of Chinese literacy to comprehend the above mentioned passages.Thus other ordinary group tuition would not help as they do not have the resources to cater this need to them.He or she would need a personal tutor to help them with this need.Recommended:(4-8 lessons)

d) Then for those students who scores A1 for all subjects except for Chinese.Is Chinese important for them?

Of course!Firstly,the overall score would be pulled down by the borderline pass or even fail in Chinese. The student would not be able to go to the top class or desirable stream or even school in the case of students opting for IP/IB transfer.Applications or scholarships also take into consideration the overall result.Among my students,there's a lot who are from the third category.They belong to premier schools like ACS(I),MGS,Crescent Girls',RGS,RI and Hwa Chong.These students show the most improvement after tuition,usually about half a year later.recommended:(8-12 lessons)

Other than IT, how do you cover exam syllabus for PSLE and O level?

To prepare for O levels oral, I have a collection of past year papers and top school prelim exam papers for students to practice and analyse.

To prepare for PSLE,oral is one of the most important components of the exam.Its an easy way to pull the overall score up.I have passages and pictures from top sch notes and CD-Roms.Web cam and video recording would effectively increase the confidence of students to face the examination. They would also know their weakness in tonation,pronunciation and speech after each recording so that they could adjust to the correct one.

PSLE Revision:

Composition techniques are imparted.For example,students would learn how to start and end their compositions with style and creativity so as to stand out from the rest to add value to content.Theme should be included to enhance the meaning of the essay.Good phrases,idioms and proverbs will be given to students for memorising so as to strengthen the language component of the essay.(not only beneficial to essay writing but also to comprehension and Oral)

Sec 3 Higher Chinese(How to improve Oral in Exam?)

One type of students have problems using the useful notes the teacher give them.They do not know how to "digest" them. The contents must be used in a flexible manner,according to situations and not in a rigid manner.If they come for lessons with their notes i am able to use it to their advantage, in a variety of purposes.

Next type of students have a misconception that reading a passage fast equals to fluency but it is completely opposite.Most likely the student have no rhythm and expression when reading.Nervousness cause repetitions in phrases,or stuttering.

A lot of top schools especially SAP schools do not carry out preparation on oral exams during the holidays. At most the teachers would just give them some notes to study. The schools feel that there is not a need for students to be adequately prepared as oral is easy.But there are some who have a weak foundation in Chinese and others who can write beautifully but could not express their thoughts in speech.They are not fluent enough and have inappropriate pauses in their conversations.A strong knowledge of current affairs is also needed for a distinction in Oral.

Written paper

Writing skills and summary techniques will be taught.Many SAP schools have their exam papers set to an extremely high standard higher than that of O level, raising concern over students who failed Higher Chinese in SA1.Holidays is a good time to strengthen the language pillar so as to raise confidence in the students to empower them to face the tests and exams when school reopens.

PSLE Oral Examination(how to improve?)
Conversation:Sec 4/P6 who are very shy and not expressible,do not know how to elaborate their points.
Reading: there would be some people who are weak in articulation and tonation of characters and there is some who have a limited vocabulary resulting in them skipping a lot of words during reading,thus reducing fluency.Some other students are caused by fear of opening their mouths to articulate the words properly,havin the "Jay chou" accent.Here during lessons i can correct them using webcam and voice recording.

Importance of individual or small grp tuition

In the coming Sept holidays, i will offer 4/8 tailor-made intensive lessons with the objective of meeting targets in the SA2 Exam. The highlight would be a 9-10 intensive lessons for those students preparing for major exams(PSLE,"O" level).Therefore, it is important for lessons to be effective so as to meet the academic demands of the student.(homework,assignments like newspaper reviews,common tests and finally the exams)

Hi guys. Yeah, I know...it's me again. Just wanted to give props to Mr. Kok for teaching me all these years. (3 years or so) Now that I've improved so much in Chinese, I figured that it'd be good to write something about it. (Yes, I was allowed to create a post haha) Anyway, I've been failing Mandarin since Primary 3. I could remember it clearly cuz that day was probably one of the most *upsetting* ones in my life. I've seen better days. From there, I've been 'maintaining' this consistency to have a flair for failing the subject. I almost gave up on it. When Mr. Kok came to tutor me though, it was a different feel. It's not like the school's usual take-this-and-start-writing style of learning but instead, I was exposed to some really interesting (and fun) methods. Television, CDs that contain audio clips from chapters in the textbook and such. Ah yes...multimedia is the word I've been looking for. So anyway, I've just made it through the Chinese 'O' Level Oral Exam as well as the written paper recently. Surprisingly, I've got a 'Distinction' for the oral exam, and I thought I would get a 'Pass' or 'Merit' at most. Unfortunately, my written paper wasn't that good, so I've gotten a C6 overall. I mean...that's a good thing for me because I've been failing my Chinese all the while. From an F9 to C6! That's a 3-grade improvement! I'll be re-sitting for the written paper though, so I'm confident that I would get better results this time round due to that fact that the 'Distinction' from the oral exam had just pulled me up to the "non-failure zone." (twice a week) in the beginning of last year. Even though he was quite stable in his

chinese,he found it hard to cope with the different syllabus of Chinese and Higher

Chinese. He has certainly improved over the months of tuition where he put in the

heart to memorise phrases essential for Oral exam . He got an A for

Chinese in his SA1 and Prelim.For Higher Chinese, he achieved Distinction which

was a shock to him as he normally get a Pass for his Higher Chinese His

improvement was also noticeable in school.He was invited to the stage at his school

prestentation ceremony to recive an award for the student with the biggest improvement in his Higher

Chinese results. He too also scored an A for his PSLE chinese which pulled his aggregate to 235 which he can

The "O" Level results are out and besides the Sec 4 of 2009.The Sec 3 of 2010 also have gotten their "O" Level Chinese results back.Our students have done exceptionally well in the exams and were mentioned earlier in previous posts at June.

Firstly, Jeremy Ma,from Anglican High Higher Chinese student,this year Sec 4 have gotten an A2 for chinese,outpassing the expectations of many.He has also achieved a Distinction in the Oral.He joined 8 tuition lessons during the June Holidays where he learned primarily the skills of Oral Exam.As he is busy of with CCA and school work,he is unable to continue with the CCA and he might get A1.

Shawn Chiang from NUS High School of Mathematics and Sciences(NUSHS) last year Sec 4,scored C5 for the "O" Level Chinese.A big improvement from his expected results.
From a person who normally fail his paper with D7 or E8 and with little confidence of the language, to someone who is more confident now and even able to relate a news incident in fluent mandarin to the oral examiner.He joined the tuition when he was Sec 2 and carried on for 2 and a half years once per week till Sec 4.He came from an english speaking background thus he lacks the foundation of the language which needs time for him to build.Before the tuition when he was asked to write newspaper article reviews,he had to look up the dictionary for practically most of the words but now he is able to communicate his thoughts.
I know that using a traditional and inflexible way of teaching him Chinese he will be bored and thus will not put in the effort.I try to use interactive tools,the internet,news websites like omy.com to give him contact with hot news topics that might come out in exam.He also learnt how to use the computer to type out his compo,allowing the process to be faster so as to overcome the fear of writing long essays. (400-500 words)They turn out to be more effective than the old way of teaching textbook.We also give him pen-and-paper assignments like top school paper to prepare him properly for the "O" Level.
For example there was once his school was sent to Community Involvement Programme(CIP) work,to send rations to the elderly living in the one-room flat.He was later asked to write a composition on that.Not sharp in his language he is unable to express his thoughts.During tuition both of us looked up the websites to view videos and pictures to aid him in expressing his thoughts to me so that i can help him.It was a success and the teacher commended him on his work.
Su Jintian last year Sec 4 from CHIIJ Katong Convent Sec has gotten B3 for Chinese.IN 2007,she joined my tuition when she was in Sec 2.At that time she was getting around 50 plus in her exams.Her mom expected more and found me by recommendation.
Her school does give a lot of assignments like book reviews,newspaper article reviews,textbook practices.Especially book reviews as the book that the school assigned to Jintian was too difficult for her to understand.She had to consult me everyday in one week of the holidays.Especially during the school holidays she will have a heavy load comprising of internet work which she will always bring to tuition to ask me. Are you finding hard to adapt to rapid changes in Chinese?The school year has started for many and there are a lot of things you need to adapt to.Especially from primary school to secondary school,you are in a total new environment and the increased number of subjects is shocking.My son who is in sec1 this year fortunately is able to cope well with his studies.
For students going towards secondary school chinese what you can find the most different is that the textbooks are much difficult and the style of writing is slightly different.You will also learn applied Chinese like writing formal letters, if you are in higher chinese,formal writing and summary will be routine for you.Of course the word limit will increase.
It's actually quite normal for students to take some time to adapt to the this new "Chinese" environment.But for those with weak foundation in Chinese,it is a challenging feat for them.With little exposure to Chinese at home during the holidays,they might struggle with school work in the term.
For express Chinese students some schools require them to do newspaper articles and compositons are no longer picture based instead on situational.
For Higher Chinese they have the pressure of remaining in higher chinese stream.Most schools wil set a banchmark whereby higher chinese students have to pass in the overall results in order to stay in higher chinese.I have seen many people drop to express chinese at the end of sec1 and 2.Most often is that they cant cope with the high standard.A high standard includes increasing the length of the compo(800-1000 words at least) Lengthy and difficult passages resulting in people not being able to finish the paper.And of course applied Chinese like newspaper articles,book reviews and letter writing.
The method to scoring well in Chinese is totally different with that of primary school.During primary school,as long as you work hard,do those exam papers and assessment books you are able to score well.If your child is in a elite school where academic competition is stiff,Chinese might be the subject that separates the First in level to the tenth in level.Chinese is one subject sometimes even top students cant cope with.It can be your "friend" which will pull you up and your "enemy" that pull you down.Therefore Chinese might be crucial if you want your son to do outstandingly well.
But in secondary school the principle of "language cant be learnt overnight" will start to surface.Therefore we need time to build up the language ability.
Xpress students
I will place emphasis on news.They are the source for questions likely to come out in the "o" level.Newspaper article reviews can come out in compo paper,Oral exam conversation can be on a news topic even in the main paper comprehension passages can be tool to test your knowledge of news.I will also use news portal websites like omy.com and xin.sg to enhance interactive learning following MM Lee's message.

Higher Chinese
I will also do the same for the higher Chinese students on the news segment.TO enhance every individual's writing skill,I would give them more opportunities to practice writing.With frequent practices,the mind will be able to flow with the hand when writing.For during the compo exam,time constraint will push you to " write while you think". I will also pass some high standard reading materials (maybe from China or taiwan) to the students for reading.Sompe examples include《少年文摘》，<四方八面>和《直通车》。This will bring up the standard of chinese through frequent reading.

Don disliked Chinese when he first came to my tuition.After some time, he has developed interest in it through multimedia and news articles.He is a smart and quick-witted student with a good memory.This helped him in the oral when the picture for 2009PSLE was something very different like a farewell party.During his Prelim exam he gotten A with his main paper scoring77/90 but his other components pulled him a little.He is able to elaborate well for the scenario.Overall, he is the top 3 in his class with a high expectation from teacher.His teacher wrote on his paper"希望你再接再厉！到了小六会考，可以考到更好的成绩！加油！”But unfortunately,he didnt perform as many expected him to be in the top 10%.We hope next year he will be able to excel beyond his limits in secondary sch."加油 Don,We know you can do better in secondary school with your intelligence and good memory.With your likability you will be able to enlarge your social circle like never before.

Comments:HE is a very bilingual child.very likable.When he gotten back his Prelim results he was complacent and thought his standard was there. What can we learn from this?We should not be relaxed when we see our child's good results in the prelims because some schs have their prelim exams set too easy resulting in students relaxing themselves and think that they can perform the same result in the PSLE.We must get top-sch paper and let the tutor analyse it so that we can gage ourselves with people from the other schools to prepare for the PSLE.

Example 2:JIng Xiang
When his mom called me in June.For SA1 he scored 50 plus.His mum asked me if he can improve from his borderline pass.I wanted to see him first.He is a very quiet and attentive boy.He don't really talk only nod and shake his head.He will suffer in the oral exam if he continue like this.So I used some lessons to teach him on the techniques,how to speak up with videos and voice-recording.After some lessons he's able to have the courage to speak up.A good thing about him is he is very committed in coming for lessons.He will always be punctual and never skip lessons even if he has another tuition which clashes.He will rush to another tuition one after another.JIng Xiang you must not stop your tuition and positive attitude.Because a lot of people stopped their tuition and think that they can manage but it is a whole new different syllabus with book reviews,news article reviews.They will wait till S3 to work on their language but its too late especially those with weak foundation cannot get expected marks.In the end overall will get pulled down,cant get into a good class.Because language is not a thing you can improve overnight,it takes time to improve.Even if you do not have tuition with me, you can ask me any questions regarding homework in SEC Sch through msn.Wish you a happy 4 yrs of Secondary school life.

How To Choose Your Child's Secondary School?

It was the moment of truth we all have been waiting for:the Release of your child's PSLE results.
That results which will determine the next 4-6 years of your child's life.The night before 26/11 was tough one for you to sleep well. How much will he/she get?What if he/she didn't do well?Which secondary school is the most suitable for your child?Hundreds of question clouded your mind while you are trying to get some rest.

The next day when you entered the sch hall,tension came upon every single person.The principal started of with her speech.Followed by the recognition of the top 10 students in the PSLE. While calling the names,you were hoping that your child would be up there.To your dismay, your child wasn't among the top 10. Next your upon receiving his/her results,he/she showed it to you with face down not daring to look at you.Your child scored below 230.Which sch can he/she go?Soon, your phone begin to ring and relatives call to ask about your child's results.You did not know how to answer to them and rejected their calls.You are disappointed,worried,heart broken,embarrassed. You do not know what to do.

The next few days calls still keep coming in with tuition teachers,relatives,friends asking about your child's result.You have "no face" to speak to them. Even your child stays at home and don't dare to be out,to avoid people asking them about their results.

You do not have any mood to carry out your activities,let alone work.You keep worrying about choosing the right school for your child.Being a parent of three kids, i have been through this experience twice when my two older sons are in P6.I could understand exactly how you feel.

How to choose a secondary school?
1.If you do not have a school in mind that is suitable with your score ,start with choosing the school with a decent avg L1B5 "o" level banding.It is equivalent to the average score the the sch students have at the end of their 4 yrs education.This will give you a good gage at what the school can offer for your child's secondary sch academics.

2.Next you might want to consider looking into the discipline of the school. So that you will not end up letting your child enter a sch with bad company.

3.Thirdly take into consideration your child's interest and talents.Aft that see if there's any enrichment programs and CCAs that will develop their potential.This would allow your child to enjoy the next 4 yrs of education with meaningful and educational programs.

4.Fourly distance play a factor.

Most importantly, discuss with your child the choices of the schools for it is them who will be entering secondary school.Give them more freedom in having important choices in life.

COULD THE TRUE STORY HAPPEN TO U?

P3 Alex from St.Gabriel Pri is a very cute boy.When I first hear about his result,i was shocked. As SA2 is only 3 months away, how can i pull his overall from 28 to a pass? But when i saw him, i saw a bond between us where i find him very special.He was actually a very emotional boy and quite a hyperactive boy.
But when i had my first lesson with him,I found him quite different. He follows everything i say, and when i told him some stuff,he will laugh cheerfully.This shows that the boy is very imaginative in relating what i had said to funny incidents.He has also enjoyed the lesson. I practiced with him Chinese Spelling by asking him to write with his finger on my hand,with just two times he was able to get full marks for his spelling. When i teach him he will pay 100% attention to me.This can be shown in his mock test results which he had passed. All the comprehension answers were all accurate and correct and he had really used what he had learnt from the tuition.One month prior to his exam i gave him extra lessons. I really pinned my hopes on him that he can pass.
But during the SA2 itself,not only did he scored 46 marks but had scored only 16 marks in the main paper. His mom was very disappointed in him and with me. She felt that all the time spent on attending the extra lessons was a waste.I was very shocked with the outcome and thus called his teacher up to find out his class performance and the reason behind his marks. She told me Alexandra is a very cheerful and shy boy,just sometimes very emotional maybe because of the scoldings from his parents. He pays attention in class and takes pride in his work. A sudden drop in his marks was caused by the comprehension in the main paper segment. The comprehension was set to be very tricky and have no direct answers.They involve inference. But the marks of all the other components had improved. He is a very intelligent boy and has a very good memory. He could only rely on the sentences and phrases he had memorised for the exams.His comprehending and application skills are not very good. We cannot say he had not improved because the teacher told me that he had shown improvement in his attitude and work.
We should handle children with care and patience when they did not do as we expected. Even though Alex dropped by 12 marks for only the main paper,his sch teacher and i agreed he had really tried his best and had put in effort where he had improved in his oral,listening comprehension and composition components.If this carries on, he will give up on Chinese as he had put in hard work and not only did not reap the results but also got pressured.. I only guarantee for 1 year and only when the student has the right attitude and adequate lessons.

Jian Chen's results has definitely shown a shocking improvement in his results.From 66 marks for Chinese in SA1 to 74.5 in SA2.All his language components have improved greatly,with Compo 16/20,Compre 35.5/50,listening Compre 7/10, Oral 16/20.
With just 4 months attending my tuition he has improved greatly. But before 4 months ago, it was a different story. My first impression of him was that he was a very active person who could not sit still(not necessarily bad but a difficulty).He does not like written work and during lessons he will not pay attention. Originally in a group tuition with another P4, he tends to get distracted during lessons and talk with him.It was quite a headache because i was quite worried about his exams which will be coming in 3-4 months time.How can I improve in such a short time? He is a intelligent kid with a high potential,just a bit lazy and easily distracted. I talked to his mom and we decided to withdraw him out of the group tuition into 1-to-1 tuition so that he will not get distracted.
1 month before his exam, i keep giving him extra lessons as I feel time is running short.He will come to my house during the weekends from 8am-12pm,lasting 4 hours. It was still quite a task getting him to do his work. Sometimes i will need to be flexible and Go through with him the exam papers and include many short breaks in between lessons. I also need to be patient and talk to him nicely.
His committment play a huge part. During the PSLE marking days, where primary sch students need not attend sch, he is the only one who went for intensive lessons. Consecutively for 4 days he keeps coming from 8am to 12pm for tuition. Even though, he lives at Bukit Timah,His noble mom takes time to drive him to my place despite a busy schedule.
As a result of his hard work,he has shown improvement....

Indo-chinese student,Marthen is a intelligient and smart but only has a weak subject Chinese.With a score of 51 in the SA1,he improved by 10 marks and scored 60 for SA2. He started home tuition three months ago so theres a lot of intensive lessons. With his standard, he should at least score an 75 for Chinese. It is just his short concentration span and illegible handwriting.I have spoken to his Chinese teacher about his situation in class. He is quite a well-behaved boy just very easily distracted.His teacher praised him for his 10 mark improvement within 3 months which is considered remarkable.Thus sometimes I need to speak with the language teacher in school to find out his problems. I hope to see him improve to 75-80 marks after solving his main problems in his character.

Dear Parents,

Hi!It's the most important time of the year we all have been waiting for where most of the students get their results back. Being a parent and a tutor myself i understand many of you will be worried. You want your child to reach their highest potential especially in the area of academics but he or she isn't performing. When you look at the report book, it beats you that your child's weakest subject is Chinese. When you are called to the Meet-the-Parent session, the teacher complained about your child's negative attitude towards Chinese.He or she did not hand in homework even if he or she hand in the work is sloppy, don't pay attention during lessons and even tried all means to avoid Chinese. You were fuming with rage and those things are the last thing you would like to hear. You have been asked to consider your child's options to stay in Higher Chinese or drop to Express Chinese,stay in Express Chinese or drop to normal Chinese,or in Primary School's case stay in Chinese or drop to foundation Chinese.You do not know what to do whether to give up or to stay.If he or she stay in that subject level, He or she might continue to drop in her results. If he or she drop to another level, would it be a waste?It's not like he or she didn't prepared for the examination. You signed your child up for tuition classes or home tuition, gave them assessments or exam papers and he or she also went for remedial or supplementary lessons. Does it mean that the time and money invested to help your child isn't helpful at all? You feel disappointed and helpless at what you can do for your child. If i were you i would also feel that since my child has lost interest in Chinese.What should I do? Without tuition, his results will drop
further.With tuition, he or she would not like it. You are caught in a total dilemma!

Even though i myself is a Chinese language tutor, I don't place my profit as my priority. I am more committed in helping these types of student regenerate their interest towards their Mother tongue. Nothing is more satisfying than to see my students motivated to learn Chinese in an enjoyable manner which I feel is my greatest accomplishment.Sometimes your child does not fit with traditional methods of teaching. Not that reading and memorising the textbook or just drilling into assessment book are not helpful at all but they only do so to the hardworking ones. If students are taught continuously with these methods, they will continue to dread Chinese until they reach a state of a complete abandonment of the language. They just need innovative methods using IT which give sight,sound and light so as to make learning animated. Youths and kids nowadays are in touch with technology. Is your child always smsing their friends, going on facebook,msn,twitter and updates his or her blog everyday. Or does he or she plug in to music which annoys you. Don't despise these gadgets as they can be the bridge to your child interest to Chinese. Using technology which they would prefer, they would recognise that Chinese is not as worthless as they thought it was, instead they could be applied in daily lives especially in technology. Unfortunately many parents have the misconception that typing Chinese will not allow exposure to Chinese handwriting. When your child learn how to type Chinese characters they are indirectly checking dictionary increasing their vocabulary. These are the ways i teach and the ways my program can be tailor-made.
The next thing to look out for is the chemistry between the teacher and the student. If the student hates the teacher, of course he or she will detest the subject. But if the teacher becomes sombody the student look upon and find comfortable learning under, there would be a high chance of your child excelling in Chinese. The most important thing would be to open the hearts of students and to treat them like a good friend, and young adult. They would then feel somebody cared for their feelings and thus respect what the teacher said. There would be no stress in sending your child for tuition. Under this atmosphere, your child could learn enjoyably and effectively.

The types of students not able to perform as expected:

Students with short concentration span
Their concentration usually varies between 20 to 60 min. They might not be hyperactive just active and belong to the more sporty group of people. We all go through it. Something about a certain subject
or language we dread to learn or pick-up because we may feel insignificant to the rest of the people who're better than us or when we just have absolutely no interest in learning it at all. So how can you actually be interested in something you know you won't find enticing?I know it isn’t as easy as it sounds, but the concept of it is pretty simple – learn to like it. This is the case for any academic subjects really, such as math, science, and languages - one in particular which I enjoy teaching and that would be Mandarin. Now I get a lot of students who are unmotivated and demoralized, and I share the same sentiment as I’ve been through it myself back in those days. But then I realized that any subject, no matter how hard it may be to study, can indeed be *studied* as long as there’s an interest. That is one of my main educational goals as a teacher and tutor.

My objective is to make – but not force – students to garner at the very least, a fair amount of interest in Mandarin so as to help them “pull through” the exams. But it doesn’t just stop there with a mere just-pass grade, because it is of equal importance to me to help them achieve good grades and make them realize their true capabilities. With the assistance of digital media and today’s technology, which I now believe to be a common source of both information and entertainment to young people, I can finally realize my visions and make this goal possible – that learning is not all about reading books and memorizing words or phrases, but doing so in a fun and enjoyable manner in order to foster and build interest in all the things we learn, including myself.

My students told me that overall they find the PSLE Oral question quite easy unlike the one 2 yrs ago.Below are the main points that conclude their views:

1. 20/08 PSLE Chinese Oral's paper is quite easy.
*Those students with a weak foundation in Chinese find the passage easy to read as it has no difficult words.
*On the same day Picture description's topic is a PARK.
-It has a pond.There's a kid which sits by it using a stick to poke fishes.
-There's also a child feeding the tortoises even though there is a sign in front of the pond that says "No Feeding"
*There's a a family having a picnic there.
-One of them are reading newspaper.
- The child is drawing on a piece of paper.
-Another member of the family is eating an apple.
*There's a kid who climbed a tree
* Besides that there is a kid who plucked some flowers of the shrubs.

2. 21/08/09 PSLE Chinese Oral exam
*For read-the-passage there's only a few unfamiliar words to most students.
*On the same day the picture deplicts a scene in the CLASSROOM where the students are celebrating the TEACHER'S FAREWELL.
-Some students are writing their wishes to the teacher
-Some students are drawing an ugly image of the teacher.
-There's one student who isn't helping at all instead he is sleeping.

Sometimes,I use internet to facilitate the teaching of Chinese Language.One example is lead.com.sg,an MOE website used by many primary schools for E-learning.The attractive animations and sounds will keep the students' interests aroused during lessons. Students will have fun while attempting the practices as they are presented in a variety of ways which include crossword puzzle,maze etc.Students feel that this is definitely better than the common method of doing assessment papers or books which will cause them to lose interest towards Chinese.

Hi, I'm a student from NUS High School of Mathematics and Science. I'm in express chinese, and I've been taking Mr. Kok's chinese tuition for about two and a half years (I took it from sometime in Secondary two till Secondary four). My mother does not know anything about chinese and my dad only knows basic conversational chinese- and my chinese at that time reflected that. Before this tuition, I didn't even dare speak a word of chinese because I had no confidence in the language. However, after this tuition, I've learnt much more in speaking chinese with Mr. Kok's oral preparations.
I've also gained more understanding in the language. Last time when my teacher wanted us to hand up newspaper reviews I had to use a dictionary for practically most of the words. But now, I understand more and newspaper reviews have become much easier for me. I've also learnt how to properly communicate my thoughts in the language.
Overall, I've more confidence and my chinese has definitely improved, particularly in writing it. Thank you!

I'm a student from Anglican High. Born and bred in an english speaking family, chinese was seldom use in my form of communication with others. It was alien to me, and obviously my chinese standard was far beyond expectation of a higher chinese student due to the seldom usage of chinese. In my recent mid-year examinations, i barely passed my chinese with a score of 52! I did not even expect to pass. I decided to seek some help to aid in my chinese grades and fortunately, my dad found Mr Kok.
I enrolled in 8 lessons during my holidays with Mr Kok to improve my chinese. As O'Level Chinese Oral was approaching, Mr Kok was very patient in teaching me the tips to get high scores for Oral. He taught me how to speak confidently and fluently, and most importantly with emotions according to the Oral passage given. I also went through several creative ways to improve my confidence and the way i speak to look more professional which will present a positive image and appearance to the examiner.
After these lessons, i have realised that i am more confident of myself when i speak chinese and i can now express myself properly in chinese without causing any misunderstanding. Also, the voice recording of my reading passages shocked me! I sounded so different from the past, the ang moh sounding guy. I was now a pure chinese! I've gotten to know about this tuition from my brother, Bertrand, whose classmate was under Mr Kok. My brother started attending this class after he had gotten his Chinese O Level results. After two months of lessons, he improved by two grades, from a C5 to B3.

I decided to attend this tuition to accompany my cousin, who's going to take her O Levels this year.

Having attended the tuition for the past month with my cousin, I've understood more about the format of the O Level Examination. Being sec3 only, this has provided me with a headstart.
I've learnt many skills that can be used in answering the comprehension questions. However, the composition skills he taught were the most helpful to me. From correcting simple mistakes, to helping me expand concepts, Mr Kok has helped me in my composition writing in many ways.
Mr Kok usually discusses the situation of the essay before we start writing to let us have a clearer view of what we were writing. This provides a personal response instead of the usual classroom experience, and during this time, it provided me with an opportunity to improve on my oral skills.

Sec 4 student about to sit for O Level Examinations

I'm a student from Anglican High, currently under Mr Kok. Actually, I've only been under him for a month. My prelim results were not very ideal ( I got a C! ), and my mother enlisted Mr Kok's help in the crutial one month before the O Levels. Although one month is a very short time, I've had 16 lessons with Mr Kok already!

My initial fears of the Chinese language lessened as the lessons progressed. Mr Kok taught me by giving me some practice papers from top schools to improve on my analysing and answering skills. My doubts about the Cloze Passage section were decreased after he assured me that it was a mere 5% of the entire score. Compositions were what he emphasised on - they carried the highest weightage of marks. I learnt essential composition skills and good phrases to add into my essays. My grasp of the Chinese language improved and I could form sentences in the "Chinese" structure - before, I was using the "English way". I am also able to express my thoughts and emotions in my essays, elaborating them further so that the marker would be able to relate to them ( and thus award me higher marks! ).

The O Levels start next week! It'll be my second time taking the Chinese paper. Wish me luck!

[TIPS FOR P6 CHINESE COMPOSITION]
Why must we review the topic?

Before you write, you need to read the topic carefully to find out the objective of

the question, so that you will be able to capture the important points, as a result

you will not have a problem of writing something out of topic/point or running out

of time.

The methods and steps for topic review

. Find out the keywords , for e.g in "My Favourite Present", a present shows that it

can not be more than 1 present.

. Use important factors as a basis , think about these keywords and related

details.

Draw outline - a waste of time or save time?

It is not a waste of time. Draw the outline about 5 minutes to avoid getting out

of point/topic or too long.

Five minutes to think-not more than that not less than that

Design the framework of the picture.

Pictorial and tabular composition

During the process of thinking, if you realise the words cannot express your

thoughts, you can use picture or table to temporarily replace the complete

sentences.

The PSLE Oral Examination for Chinese is separated into 3 components which are:

1. Reading the passage
2. Picture description
3. Conversation

5 minutes prior to the actual oral examination, here are a few things you should do while waiting for your turn:

1. Read the passage a few times

2. If you encounter any words that you really (I mean really and seriously) don't know how to read, skip it

3. In order to prevent missing out important parts of a picture, make it a point to describe it in a clockwise or anti-clockwise direction

4. You're expected to describe the picture continuously; the more detailed you are, the better

Dos and Donts

1. Refrain from pointing at the passage or picture with your finger

2. Give your opinions about the things you see in the picture. Use words like "Wo jue de", "Wo ren wei" or "Wo xiang". If you can't tell if the person is an officer for example, (probably due to poor printings), use words like "Zhi yuan" as a general term to identify the character.

3. Try to control your reading speed;

> You might miss a word if you read too fast or

> Too slow and you might not be fluent enough

4. Stick to the theme and mood of the passage and read it as if you are really 'feeling' the story. Some moods include:

> Happiness
> Disheartened
> Angry

Dialogue of old people should sound slow, young characters should sound fast. It's all about the mood :)

5. Always remember to use the right mood for the passage but do not over exaggerate.

*P4-6:Picture description techniques

1. Do not directly translate english into mandarin (grammar to be exact) and never use english in mandarin as well. Don't use english as a medium to think up the structure of your speech but instead, use chinese.

2. Do not talk about irrelevant subjects or topics in a picture description.

3. Leave questionable parts of the picture to the conversation section and try not to dwell too much on the subject as time is of course, precious.

4. Describe the environment seen in the picture first

5. After doing so, get right to the point of systematically describing parts of the picture either in a clockwise or an anti-clockwise direction.

The examiner isn't testing your knowledge, but he/she is testing how well you can express yourself and how fluent you are. Your point of view shouldn't be a short one-liner but instead, you should elaborate on the point you are tackling at.

P5-S4:* ESSENTIAL TIPS FOR CHINESE 'O' LEVEL ORAL EXAM *

1. Greet the examiner

2. Always keep an eye contact with the examiner

3. Put a smile on your face; it's not like the examiner's gonna kill you :)

4. Make a conscious effort to refrain from bad habits like shaking your legs. Doing so will give a bad impression of yourself to the examiner.

5. Read it aloud and with clarity, try not to 'press' your voice or you will sound like you're mumbling. You can prevent doing so by placing your paper more to the front and not so close to yourself

6. Be polite to the examiner; if he/she were to ask you a question and you don't catch the meaning, gently ask the examiner to repeat the question (e.g 'Qing Nin Chong Fu") For information's sake, "Nin" is a more respectful word to address the examiner

7. Refrain from using English words like "then", but instead, speak fully in Mandarin like "Hai You", "Hou Lai", "Er Qie", or "Jie Zhe Xia Lai". "Excuse me" can be said as "Bu Hao Yi Si". Speaking in English may also result in the deduction of marks

8. Skip the word if you don't know how to read it. For words that you're unsure of, find its closest pronunciation and say it quickly because the teacher might not be able to catch what you just said and will assume that you have read it correctly anyway

9. In a conversation, the first sentence makes the best impression. Try not to spend too much time thinking about what you should say on the first sentence. You don't have to think of really bombastic words or sentences to express yourself, just use simple words which you can say in confidence. Think on your feet, and you will be able to score.

10. Take note of a passage's mood (With a happy theme, read it as if you really are a happy person) and emphasize on important words. "Feel" what you say and don't read it with a single-toned voice.

11. Pause at regular intervals if a sentence is too long. Don't read the entire sentence or you may run out of breath. You can prevent doing so by reading the passage a few times (before you sit for it) and take note of its structure

12. Treat your examiner as a friend, and both of you will be able to converse and interact well with each other. The examiner isn't here to test your knowledge in a conversation, but instead, wants to see how well you can talk to him/her. This will in turn lighten up the tense atmosphere, so you can actually enjoy talking to the examiner.

S1-4:Listening Comprehension tips for 'O' Levels

> It may be easy, but do not get over-confident and think Listening Comprehension does not require any preparation.

> The listening comprehension are related to the following topics/subjects:

- News
- Stories
- Broadcasting
- Reports
- Short passages
- Speeches

You will have to answer 10 questions in the Listening Comprehension. This exam weighs 10 marks and would last for 30 minutes or so.

> Think "What, when, where, who, why?" and "How?", otherwise, you would probably run short of time

> Listen to more speeches so that you can bring out a more accurate tone while realizing your own flaws or mistakes.

>The Listening comperhension examination questions will be read by the radio station DJs so we should familiarize ourselves to their TONE and ACCENT.

> You can listen to these speeches by tuning in to radio stations like: 95.8, 93.3, 97.2 or 100.3.

1. There is an easy way to memorize what you can do in a conversation. Just follow this acronym: CREET,
which stands for: Concept, Rationalize, Experience, Examples, Thought

2. Don't just respond with a "yes" or a "no" but instead, elaborate further by explaining your reasons so the examiner won't have to continually prompt you to do so.

3. A speech requires you to be more expressive, but refrain from being too informal just in case you would or might accidentally utter an undesirable word of the language like "Bu shuang".

Hi, my name is Wayne, I'm 16 years old and I would like to take the time to give a testimonial to Mr Kok regarding the tuition he has given to me in the past few years, which is 2 and a half years to be exact. The first time I attended his home tuition left me with an impression that his lesson was unlike any typical school teacher, which is good because he has a unique way of teaching by making use of television programs, (like Crossfire) CD Roms, the internet and even communicating via SMS. He's able to cater to my needs because at that time, I had no confidence in chinese at all. My results were very lousy, which is around 30 or 40 marks, so I didn't really dare to speak Mandarin to Mr Kok. So after a few more consecutive lessons, of course, I slowly began to embrace the language as a whole cuz I realized its importance to me since I'm a Chinese. My first and half-hearted attempt to write an essay ended up with 3 or 4 lines, but as time progressed, I got better at it and eventually, and I could write a full composition. I've got 47 marks in the next SA2 examination which is a noticeable improvement. By secondary 3, I am more fluent in speaking Mandarin and am also able to pass the tests. I feel this had also, in a way, made me feel more proud to be Chinese. Then again, all of this comes with lots of practice and determination, so nothing comes in easy. During the holidays, I finished reading up both textbooks A and B and did a couple of book reviews. When it was time to back to school, all the stuff I learned during the holidays had finally paid off and now, I am ultimately more confident in getting a better grade for the Chinese 'O' Levels. I am estimating a B4 - C6 with the inclusion of the oral examination marks. I hope this would clear up any doubts with Mr Kok and wish you the best for your exams as well.
